Fri, 02 Sep 2011 19:10:02 +0200 (Reuters) - Workers from state shipyard Viana do Castelo protest in front of the company's headquarters in Lisbon September 2, 2011. The workers are protesting a plan by the company, which is 240 million euros in debt, to cut about half its workforce. The government is unable to bail out the shipyard and save the jobs as Portugal this week became the latest country to tighten its budget, hoping to meet deficit-reduction targets agreed in its bailout programme.
The placards read "Listen to the workers, we have solutions" and "There is no progress without work". REUTERS/Jose Manuel Ribeiro (PORTUGAL - Tags: POLITICS CIVIL UNREST BUSINESS EMPLOYMENT)
